Poverty is the main factor why children, even at young age, are obliged to work to help their parents and family. Child labor, at some point, is deemed illegal and unaccepted but also has considerable differences exist between the many kinds of work children do. Some work could be demanding and strenuous, some are more difficult and hazardous. In some serious cases, child labor involves children being enslaved, separated from their families, exposed to serious hazards and illnesses and/or left to fend for themselves on the streets of large cities often at a very early age.

Not all work done by children should be classified as child labor that is to be targeted for elimination. Children’s or adolescents’ participation in work that does not affect their health and personal development or interfere with their schooling, is generally regarded as being something positive. This includes activities such as helping their parents around the home, assisting in a family business or earning pocket money outside school hours and during school holidays.

According to the article published by Daily News Center, these kinds of activities contribute to children’s development and to the welfare of their families, they provide them with skills and experience, and help to prepare them to be productive members of society during their adult life. In the Philippines, there are 2.1 million child laborers aged 5-17 years old based on the 2011 Survey on Children of the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA). About 95 percent of them are in hazardous work. Sixty-nine percent of these are aged 15-17 years old, beyond the minimum allowable age for work but still exposed to hazardous work. Children work in farms and plantations, in dangerous mines, on streets, in factories, and in private homes as child domestic workers. Agriculture remains to be the sector where most child laborers can be found at 58 percent.
