It’s an obvious fact that our country’s school system needs some upgrading. We have too many students, and so few classrooms and chairs, and tables, and so on. The DepEd needs to solve these problems sooner than later because it is the students who suffer from this deficiency in classrooms. Most of them sit on the floor and are forced to have classes in makeshift classrooms.
In Jose De Villa National High School in Calabanga, Camarines Sur, due to the lack of facilities like tables and armchairs, the students usually sit on “monobloc” chairs which make it difficult for them to write. So most often, the students sit on the floor in order to write down notes and do their seatwork.
Instead of waiting for the government to solve the problem of lack of tables and chairs, 15-year-old student Miguel Lagarda decided to make his own chair with a table so that he wouldn’t have to sit on the floor while writing.
According to his teacher, she did not tell them to make a chair for themselves, and was surprised that Miguel made one for himself. She never thought that he can do such a great job at making a school chair at his young age.
What’s more impressive is that Miguel Lagarda made his chair out of his own initiative. They have some extra blocks of wood at home and he thought that it would be ideal to use it to make his own chair.
Out Of Necessity
His creativity and initiative earned him the praise of the netizens when his story was featured on social media and in the television. He was featured in GMA News Facebook page and was likewise seen on the GMA morning show “Unang Hirit”.
When asked about the reason why he decided to make his own chair, Miguel’s answer is one of simplicity and necessity.
“Ginawa ko lang po ‘to dahil mahirap man po sa akin na, sa amin pong lahat, na wala pong upuan. Naisip ko po na siguro gumawa po ako ng upuan para komportable naman po ako sa pagsusulat,”the resourceful student said.
